The best Max Payne (1) mods - O to Z based on titles
Pretty decent kungfu/matrix mod by Rexter, one of the communities' best animators. Controls/moves aren't quite as refined as KF3's though.
This is the sequel to Polar Payne I assume, I (biXen) didn't play this one, but Polar Payne sure is funny, so go for it.
The first mod to introduce flammable penguins (TM), and actually stopped the development of Max Payne 2. What I like to call a 'complete' package, with a new level; models, animations, and weapons; not to mention an intro video and a sense of humor.
Excellent Postal tribute by Froz; the intro video alone is worth the download :)
Part 1: "One more cookie, mommy!"
Very short, but memorable. Guaranteed to get at least one genuine scare out of you.
Very popular map pack from Quender with 5 gameplay focused levels, some clever level design, hundreds of animations, a minecart ride, and a killer robot.
MP1 Prequel to Froz's upcoming"Skateboard Hell" on MP2.
This spurred a massive debate on levels vs gameplay mods, which included some interesting posts by mixuk.
Still great fun, and like all Froz's stuff, worth a look. I'd like to see more levels made for this.
Another MP1 Prequel to a MP2 mod. In this case, a Super Mario Bros spoof with Max Payne, the idea was later developed into Sketchbook Sam. The controls are a bit awkward (2d side view, but fps controls), but it's pretty fun.
The critically acclaimed sequel to the Halo is a ... mod. Actually, I've never played this, but MPHQ community flame mods are always interesting.
A great little Mafia inspired, story driven mod, set in the 1930s. Most notable for it's ambitious (and consitent) black and white look, which is pretty neat, but will not appeal to everyone (leaving the blood red would have been a good touch). However, despite having 3-4 levels, the mod is suprisingly short, taking on average 30 minutes to finish. Still, it's a well made mod, and definitely worth playing.
Description from author:
"If you are a max-payne fan and also had been a fan of George Micheal (obviously for his looks),
then you are with the RIGHT STUFF and its a sure shot for you. Check out Max Payne in cool shades
with a george micheal kinda beard.
All the features are as follows:-
a> Wears Cool Shades.
b> Has Got a Beard.
c> Has Got a Cool George Micheal Ear-Ring.
d> Wears Classy Looking Leathers All-over."
aka 'How to commit professional suicide'
(sorry satan :P)
Quirky MPHQ mapping contest entry that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's an interesting GTA-style mission based RPG attempt, set on small desert island that has been taken over by rival gangs of mobsters. You role is to hop over to the other side of the island, and fulfil various objectives like destroying food suplies, to assassinating various enemies.
Doesn't quite pull it off though, since some of the mission objectives are ambigious, and the AI is dodgy at times -- especially when stealth is involved (e.g. in one mission you're attacked by a guy, but if you kill him then it's game over). Also the framerate is a tad unreliable, but I guess that should be expected considering the open nature of the level. But an interesting, and entertaining mod, nonetheless; and yet another excellent candidate for a MP2 followup.
Excellent story driven mod, by 3dr regular Co11. Once again, Max Payne takes the role of an assassin, but the story is pretty trivial. Also features some great voice acting by The Baskinator.
Very good map with puzzles and multiple endings. The exit optimisation isn't particularly good, though (there's 1 so it could export); so prepare for choppy framerates. Don't let that detract you though, this is one the best.
Yes the mod is still in development. No it's not dead. Yes, Ken_Y is part of our active team.
For now, here's the original trailer.
Remember that promising looking Metal Gear Solid mod that seemed to dissappear? This is the only playable demo of the cancelled TC featuring a fairly decent model of Solid Snake.
Fairly decent mini-map by Kendo and Ildu. Not their best, but quite good nonetheless.
Yet another of Froz's original mods that is getting a MP2 makeover. It's not out yet, so in the meantime, check out the original MPHQ mapping contest runner up. His personal favourite, and definitely the best RPG attempt for Max Payne.
Not played this, but Jokke_r says it's good, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. (I wouldn't -biXen ;) )
Overrated IMHO, and in Gutbomb's too I noticed, but this is a textbook example of how to successfully position a mod. The trick is in the name, which both cashes in on the films AND implies that all other matrix mods are imitations. As a result, it is the most popular/downloaded max payne mod ever -- by a wide margin (the runner up is Kung fu, which has 100,000 less downloads).
Anyhow - decide for yourself:
Unquestionably one of the best looking user maps available, and as a result was winner of the MPHQ mapping contest by a unanimous vote. It was also publicly slammed by mixuk, one of Remedy's gameplay mapper.
