August 2020 is shaping up to be a month of great significance for Remedy fans! Besides the celebration of Remedy’s 25th anniversary & the release of Control’s “AWE” expansion, we can add another huge event to the list. Remedy and 505 games have just announced Control Ultimate Edition, slated for release on Steam, Xbox One & Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4 & 5, and the Epic Store.
The Control Ultimate Edition will consist of the base game along with both expansions. All previously released patches and fixes will be implemented from the get-go, preventing you from having to download additional patches or content. The Ultimate Edition will be available first on Steam on August 27th, followed by a digital release on PS4, Xbox One, and Epic Store on September 10. A physical edition will be released later in 2020.
Further details about the possible improvements (ray-tracing?) on next-generation platforms have not been disclosed. The Ultimate Edition for the next-generation of consoles is slated for release later this year digitally and early 2021 physically. Unsurprisingly, 505 and Remedy offer upgrade-paths for buyers of the Ultimate Edition to receive a free upgrade for a next-generation console of choice. Having said that, early-adopters are left in the dark. The upgrade options only apply to the Ultimate Edition. That’s a slap in the face of many fans I presume..
While this might not receive your sympathy, be aware that contractual bindings might prevent the standard edition of Control to be ported. An Ultimate Edition or re-release is practically a new SKU on which new terms and conditions can apply. Ideal for the consumer? Definitely not. But it might not be by choice of the developer either.
