Remedy Entertainment unveiled a new visual identity in April of 2023, signaling a departure from its iconic “Max Payne era.” With a diverse portfolio of new and classic games, Remedy aimed to reflect its evolution in its new identity. However, the studio now finds itself embroiled in a trademark dispute with Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games.
Take-Two alleges that Remedy’s new R logo resembles the distinctive “R*” associated with Rockstar Games, fostering confusion among the public. Remedy opposed the claims, but the outcome of the dispute is, as of yet, unknown.
To us, the trademark dispute appears somewhat silly, considering the distinctiveness of both logos. Ironically, this isn’t the first time Remedy has found itself in a branding quarrel. The studio previously navigated a similar situation with LucasArts, eventually settling on the logo it used before the rebranding. Adding to the complexity of this situation is the ongoing collaboration between Rockstar Games and Remedy on the development of the Max Payne Remakes.
As we await the resolution of this dispute, it remains to be seen whether the alleged similarities between the logos will hold legal weight. The outcome could have broader implications for Remedy, emphasizing the importance of visual distinctiveness in an ever-evolving landscape. Stay tuned for further updates as this dispute continues to unfold.
18/01/2024 UPDATE: Remedy has stated to Eurogamer this situation was resolved “amicably”. More information here.
