Fans of CrossfireX are feeling a mix of sadness and disappointment as the developers announced last Friday that the servers for CrossfireX will be closing down on May 18th, 2023. Despite the hard work and dedication put into the game by its developers, the game failed to attract and retain a large player base. According to Smilegate, the game was not “where it needed to be” and as a result took the difficult decision to cease development on the game, effective immediately.
Smilegate wrote a short article about the news which states; “Coming to this decision was not easy, however, we can proudly say that our players have been amazingly active, passionate and enthusiastic in working with us to create a game that would be fun and enjoyable by all. We want to thank each and every one of our players for playing CrossfireX and being a part of this journey with us.”
CrossfireX managed to grab the attention of the Remedy community as it features a two-part single-player campaign developed by the Finnish studio. However, the closing of the servers will also affect access to this content, making it unavailable.
Even though the game received mostly mixed or negative reviews at its release last February, this week’s news was still unexpected. While CrossfireX will remain playable until the servers go offline, no further content will be added and all sales will be halted.
