A game’s plot can be just as key as its gameplay or graphics in drawing players into its worlds and keeping them engaged. A well-crafted storyline can make all the difference in creating a memorable gaming experience. Layered narratives with complex characters are what Remedy is known for, one of their strong suits. With Control, the studio has proven yet again what it can do. Which leaves us wondering, with Control 2 officially announced, what’s next for this franchise?
At the end of Control, Jesse is now the new director of the Federal Bureau of Control. We’ve stopped the Hiss from further invading the FBC, and we saved Dylan, Jesse’s brother. Or did we? From all the mysteries left unresolved, Dylan’s fate is probably one of the most enigmatic. Not to even mention, where the hell is Dr. Darling? While the latter might be difficult to answer with the hints we’ve gotten, the former is easier to dwell on.
After eradicating the Hiss from Dylan’s psyche, his fate remains unclear. We find him in a coma in his quarters, and he remains so even in the game’s post-ending DLC. However, after completing the AWE content it can be seen Dylan now has hair, which might indicate quite some time has passed. When the player interacts with Dylan, we see a vision. A few – what at first glance look to be random – images flash on the screen.
The vision seems to be warning us of impending doom. Another enemy force, possibly the Hiss, is emerging from the depths and endangers New York City. When Remedy announced development on Control 2 had started, they also released concept art with the announcement. The piece depicts something that broke out of the FBC and is now on the loose in New York. Quite in line with Dylan’s vision. That makes us believe Control 2 will not solely take place within the FBC but outside of its walls. Albeit partially.
Even though Dylan survived, that doesn’t mean his vendetta against the FBC has ended. Kidnapped and imprisoned at a young age, Dylan has developed a grudge against the FBC and its agents. With Jesse now instated as Director, that grudge might also extend to include his sister. We are unsure how (or if) Dylan wakes up from his coma. The Hiss might be gone from his mind, but what ideas or motives are left behind? Perhaps Dylan will seek out ways to allow the Hiss to come back. Or maybe Dylan and Jesse will team up to find Dr. Darling? Or, what if Dylan becomes the playable character for Control 2 after Jesse went missing?
It’s still unclear what might happen, but we believe Dylan will play a vital role in any events that might happen next. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
