It is with a heavy heart I convey the news of the passing of the esteemed actor, James McCaffrey. Widely recognized for his significant contributions to the Max Payne franchise and various other video games, James left an indelible mark on the Remedy community.
McCaffrey (65) passed away last Sunday after a short battle with myeloma, an aggressive form of cancer. The initial report of his passing, shared by his close friend Kevin Dillon, was met with disbelief, a testament to the deep affection and respect James commanded. Unfortunately, hours later, the news was officially confirmed.
James McCaffrey’s career has since been commemorated by fans. Whether known for his roles in TV series like Viper and Rescue Me or for his distinctive, raspy voice in the Max Payne games, his performances were exceptional. His recent portrayal of Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2 was especially noteworthy, serving as a call-back to Max Payne and the enduring collaboration between him and Remedy.
On a personal note, this news weighs heavily on the heart. Sam Lake and James McCaffrey are my childhood heroes, and his voice has echoed in my mind since the age of twelve. Countless times, I’ve mimicked his signature delivery, reciting his words with precision. Accepting the continuation of the Max Payne franchise without him proves challenging, yet there’s solace in knowing he’s now “a bit closer to heaven.”

Both Remedy and Rockstar Games paid homage to James through their official channels. Remedy’s Sam Lake shared heartfelt words on his account:
“I’m heartbroken to hear the sad news of James McCaffrey’s passing. We worked together for more than 25 years. He was a lovely man and a dear friend. He was a key part of the Remedy family. He was a brilliant actor. No one could do what he did better than him. James was Max Payne, Thomas Zane, Zachariah Trench, and finally Alex Casey. I had the honor of sharing Max Payne’s role and Casey’s role with him. He was a joy to work with. I will cherish his memory and I miss him. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Jim.”
McCaffrey’s legacy will be preserved through the medium of gaming for years to come. Our condolences go out to everyone at Remedy, his friends and family. Rest in peace, James. You will be dearly missed.
