UPDATED – Shortly after Remedy announced they would make an appearance at Comic Con, the Finland based studio started to reveal the names of the cast and crew they would bring along. Courtney Hope and Sam lake were the first names to be mentioned. Today, finally, after many speculation, Remedy confirmed James McCaffrey will appear as Zachariah Trench. The former director of the Federal Bureau of Control. Amazing! Our original story, as published yesterday, will follow below:
James McCaffrey has a rich, long history with Remedy Entertainment. He is, of course, the actor that is responsible for the voice of our beloved, hardboiled, New York Detective. Apart from his work on the Max Payne franchise, McCaffrey has also appeared in various roles in Alan Wake (as Thomas Zane and Alex Casey). Many experienced those contributions as a genius way to provide fan service, as many Max Payne fans instantly recognized his deep and raspy voice. Unfortunately, he was completely absent from Quantum Break.
Fans can be passionate when it comes to voice actors. You might recall, in the early stages of Max Payne 3’s development, Rockstar publicly stated it was considering to look for a different actor. Someone more in line with Max’s increased age and altered appearance. This bit of news was not taken lightly within the community, as fans went on to display and voice their discontent. When Max Payne 3 re-appeared after a year of silence, James McCaffrey’s involvement was confirmed in both voice acting and motion capture roles.
Remedy is releasing more and more bits of information about Control. In the latest Dev Diary video, that focused on the game’s protagonist, it was teased the next episode would reveal the involvement of a familiar actor. This actor would portray the former director of the FBC (Federal Bureau of Control, the location the game takes place in). The tease was blurry and very short, but the silhouette bared a strong resemblance to James McCaffrey. Today, remedy has been teasing McCaffrey’s involvement even further, as their Twitter now features a photo of a bag with a copy of PC Gamer’s feature on Control, as well as copies of both Max Payne 1 and 2, for which Remedy was responsible.
We are calling it. James McCaffrey is the former Director. However, we will not be for sure until tomorrow, when the announcement hits. What do you think?
Update 28/09/2018: Remedy is going to New York Comic Con! Nothing had been revealed about the actor that plays the former Director. The backpack and the Max Payne games were hinting towards a “New York adventure.” Sam Lake, Courtney Hope and other cast members will be there. Definitely worth a visit!
In this video, Rockstar’s Rob Nelson explains why Rockstar Games went with casting McCaffrey as Max Payne in Max Payne 3 after all and what inspired the character’s looks.
