Last Friday Remedy announced, as part of their 25th-anniversary celebrations, their very first published videogame Death Rally is now free on Steam. And it will remain free, forever!
Death Rally was developed by Remedy and published by 3D Realms in 1996. It was around this time Sam Lake joined the studio as a writer. While originally supposed to write the text for menus, Lake saw an opportunity to integrate a small story in some negative space. After the release of Death Rally, Lake was already knee-deep in Remedy’s next adventure: Max Payne.
In 2012 Death Rally was remade for PC and mobile devices by Mountain Sheep and co-developed with Remedy. The premise remained very much the same: a top-down, over the top racer in which your contestants can be eliminated before the end of the race. However, contrary to the original (which was 2D) the remake was fully visualized in 3D.
