After the release of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, it took Max nearly ten years to resurface in Max Payne 3. In May last year, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of the latter mentioned videogame. That means an equal amount of time has passed since the release of Max Payne 3 as it took to develop it. It’s crazy when you think about it. Unlike our titular hero, time is certainly not moving in slow motion for us. However, the tenth anniversary of Max Payne 3 did not go unnoticed.
To mark the 10th anniversary, Rockstar Games announced Max Payne 3 – The Official Soundtrack (Anniversary Edition). Featuring the evocative music of L.A. noise band HEALTH, Max Payne 3 – The Official Soundtrack (Anniversary Edition) is also set to debut previously unreleased tracks from the game. That made sure this release was on every fan’s radar. The soundtrack was due to be released later in 2022. However, we’re already in 2023, and not a word has been heard about it since. That begs the question; what happened to the anniversary edition soundtrack? Why is it taking so long? Are there issues producing the limited number of vinyl? Or is Rockstar trying to solve some licensing issues of the non-HEALTH songs?
Unfortunately, nobody seems to know. Up to this day, Rockstar remains tight-lipped about the anniversary edition soundtrack. Some fans took matters into their own hands and directly asked HEALTH on the band’s Discord. The band replied by saying Rockstar owns the rights to the music and they can do as they please. That answer does not reveal anything other than it seems to indicate the band is not involved in compiling the new soundtrack. It’s not really Rockstar-worthy to remain silent, as the developer is usually open and honest towards its community. Having said that, until the project gets canceled I remain hopeful. I’ll take a massive delay over a cancellation any day of the week. Let’s just hope we’ll know more before the game’s 11th anniversary, due soon.
