One of Control’s ambitious levels is, without a doubt, the Ashtray Maze. If you’ve played Control from start to finish this level will leave a lasting impression. In the game, the maze functions as some sort of “lock”. Preventing you from traversing deeper in The Oldest House. In Gamespot’s Audio Logs-series, Game Director Mikael Kasurinen walks us through the conception of the Ashtray Maze. To do this, Kasurinen makes use of early game footage recorded in whitebox area’s (untextured levels built to explore game concepts), level design sheets and concept art.
It’s an incredible cool thing to see as studios more often than not, are not keen on sharing footage like this. It provides with a more deeper behind-the-scenes look and demonstrates clearly how each team member influenced the final design. The video is about twenty minutes in length and is an absolute must-see for Remedy fans and gamers that have an interest in game design.
