Apart from the many powers Jesse will be capable of using against her foes, she also will be able to use the Director’s Service Weapon. The origins and usage of that weapon have been mysterious up until today. Revealed to be an “Object of Power”, the Service Weapon is given onward to generations of Directors. Its exact age is unknown, but its properties have been revealed in a new Control video feature on Game Informer!
Lead Designer Paul Ehreth and Narrative Director Brooke Maggs spill the beans on the gun’s many forms. During the video, Ehreth reveals the gun can alternate between forms but can’t “hold” more than two at the same time.
The gun’s basic form is ‘Grip’, which is a slower firing mode that’s comparable to a revolver. Then there’s ‘Shatter’ which makes to gun function much more like a shotgun. Perfect for close range. Shatter is followed by ‘Spin’, which enables the gun to enter its rapid-fire mode, excellent for mid-range use. Last but not least there’s ‘Pierce’ which allows the gun to fire powerful, single shots that pierce through cover.
The service weapons doesn’t really use traditional ammo bur rather drains Jesse’s energy. The same energy is also used to power her abilities so the player will have to balance their use. Abilities drain more energy then the gun does, but are also much more effective against shields. The use of the weapon however, makes the energy charge back much faster, but overall does less damage then abilities.
One of the last tidbits of information revealed is about mods. Jesse can acquire mods that will change the behavior of the gun. An example mentioned in the video is that mods can help increase the gun’s reload times.
