During E3 in Los Angeles, IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey was lucky enough to meet with Sam Lake for an interview was part of the ‘IGN Unfiltered’ series. Jokingly, McCaffrey mentions how they had to setup an impromptu interview area as he’s never present in Finland and Lake is never in San Francisco. Either way, the two quickly continue to talk about Lake’s early days as a game designer in a rather relaxed atmosphere.
Sam talks about how he got involved with Remedy, what kind of prototypes they were working on at the time, the development (and voice over auditions) of Max Payne as well the movie of our titular hero. For example, Lake was very grateful a movie was made, but in future productions the team would like to be involved so they can influence the production.
McCaffrey himself is a huge fan of Max Payne and so the two take quite some time to reminiscence about the title before they move on to talk about Quantum Break and Control. Specifically, they focus on what the team learned from past experiences and how those lessons are applied in the development of new projects.
It’s a very interesting piece that gives some more insight in how personal experiences and interests shape game design. Games are made by people! Click here to visit IGN in order to watch the over 70 minute long interview with Sam Lake.
